Cycle B – Gospel of Mark

The first Sunday of Advent ushers in one of the three cycles of Scripture readings used at Mass. In 2023, the First Sunday of Advent begins Cycle B, in which we read the Gospel of Mark and chapter 6 of the Gospel of John. The overall theme of Cycle B is to emphasize the humanity of Jesus and his role as one who “came to serve, not be served, and give his life as a ransom for many” Mk 10:45. The First Readings of the Advent Masses of Cycle B speak to us of the joy of being loved by God.
