Rev. Victor V.J. Polito Called to His Rest

On July 5, 2018, the Reverend Victor V.J. Polito was called to his rest and to the glory of the Resurrection promised by the Lord. He was 91 years old.

Father Polito was born on September 16, 1926 in Amsterdam, New York and was ordained a priest on June 12, 1954 by the Most Reverend William A. Scully, Bishop of Albany, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Albany, New York. Father Polito studied at Saint Andrew College, Rochester and Saint Bonaventure College, Olean, New York and Saint Lawrence Minor Seminary; Saint Andrew’s Minor Seminary and then completed his ecclesiastical studies at Christ the King Seminary in Olean, New York.

Father Polito was assigned as Chaplain at Our Lady of the Mountains Academy, Gorham and then as associate pastor of All Saints Parish in Lancaster. Father Polito also served as associate pastor of Our Lady of the Mountains Parish in North Conway and then Saint Patrick Parish in Milford. He became Chaplain in the United States Army and served in that capacity until September 1991 when he retired with the rank of Colonel

During his retirement, Father Polito remained actively engaged in parish ministry in Amsterdam, New York. He also attended the Institute for Continued Theological Education in Rome, Italy.

On Sunday, July 8, 2018, a wake will take place at Saint Mary Church in Amsterdam, NY from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Mary Church, on Monday, July 9, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. The Rite of Committal will take place immediately after Mass at Saint Michael Cemetery, Amsterdam, NY. Riley Mortuary, Inc. at 110 Division Street in Amsterdam, New York has care of the arrangements.
