Saint Francis of Assisi School Announces Hiring of Mark Schwerdt as New Principal

August 24, 2018

(MANCHESTER, NH) – David A. Thibault, Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Manchester, announced today the hiring of Mr. Mark Schwerdt as the new Principal of Saint Francis of Assisi School in Litchfield. Mr. Schwerdt, who previously led Saint Francis of Assisi school as principal for three years, returns to this position on August 20.

“We welcome the return of Mr. Schwerdt to St. Francis as he reprises his role as Principal,” noted Mr. Thibault. “After leading St. Patrick Academy for the previous school year, the St. Francis community is grateful for the wealth of experience and leadership brought forth by Mr. Schwerdt. Through his devotion to education and Catholic values, I know he will continue to exemplify the academic excellence and pursuit of virtue expected of our staff and students.”

“Mark has already begun focusing his attention and effort on promotion, enrollment and the organization of the school,” said Father Jeffrey Statz, pastor of Saint Francis of Assisi Parish. “He brings to St. Francis his love for Christ and his Church with a great zeal and commitment, along with the teachers to help form our children in Christian virtue. Mark is excited to begin what in many ways is something new, yet familiar and close to his heart.”

Before returning to St. Francis of Assisi School, Mr. Schwerdt served as Head of School at St. Patrick Academy in Portsmouth for the 2017-2018 school year. In addition to his role as administrator, he implemented a new Religion and Classical History curriculum, increased the school’s retention rate, and pioneered the creation of two newsletters as well as digital media channels.

During Mr. Schwerdt’s previous tenure at Saint Francis of Assisi, he increased student enrollment by over 65% while establishing a new mission statement and further solidifying the school’s Catholic identity and culture. Mr. Schwerdt also worked with Father Statz to hire and mentor new staff, collaborated with parents to create service projects and after-school enrichment programs, and expanded the school’s marketing initiatives and fundraisers.
