Worship

The Office of Liturgy is responsible for planning and overseeing diocesan liturgies involving the bishop of Manchester. It is also responsible for assisting parishes with liturgies at which the bishop will preside or celebrate. In addition, the Office of Liturgy provides the priests and faithful of the diocese resources for the encouragement of liturgical understanding, appreciation, and celebration.

Music Ministry Opportunities at St. Joseph Cathedral
"Those who sing, pray twice." St. Augustine of Hippo

The Cathedral Music Ministry is accepting new members for several choral groups and instrumental ensembles:

1. Cathedral Choir - The Cathedral Choir leads, supports and enhances the assembly's sung prayer at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday liturgy in addition to feasts, solemnities, concerts and Diocesan events. Choral repertoire consists of a' cappella motets from the Renaissance period through music of the contemporary period. The Cathedral Choir is accepting new members for all voice parts but most especially tenors, basses and altos. The Cathedral Choir rehearses on Thursday evenings beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Cathedral.

2. Diocesan Festival Choir - Comprised from singers across the Diocese, the Diocesan Festival Choir is the primary choir for the major Diocesan liturgical celebrations at the Cathedral of St. Joseph as well as throughout the Diocese. There are only a few rehearsals a year which are held on Monday or Tuesday evenings at the Cathedral beginning at 7:00 p.m. All voice parts are currently being accepted.

3. Cathedral Children's Choir - For children and young adults in the third grade through grade eight. The schedule for the Cathedral Children's Choir is still being worked on. Rehearsals will be held on Thursday afternoons at the Cathedral of St. Joseph.

4. Instrumentalists - A list is being developed of instrumentalists serving the musical needs of the Diocese of Manchester. Ideally, we would like to develop a Cathedral Brass Ensemble, Woodwind Ensemble and String Ensemble to assist in serving at Diocesan liturgies and events. Guitarists and percussionists would also be needed (the Cathedral currently has a set of timpani).

For more information or to obtain a registration form and calendar, please contact Mr. Eric Bermani, Director of Music and Organist at the Cathedral of St. Joseph. (603) 622-6404, Ext. 31 or e-mail at MusicNH145@verizon.net.

Thank you for your consideration and for sharing your musical gifts and talents with your parish community and Diocese.

Liturgical News

Proclaiming the Name of God
The Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of theSacraments recently issued a directive concerning the manner in whichthe name of God is rendered in the songs, prayers and readings ofliturgical celebrations. The sacred tetragrammaton, usually written as“Yahweh,” is no longer to be pronounced in liturgical settings. OurJewish ancestors considered the tetragrammaton YHWH to be such a sacredexpression of God's greatness that it was deemed unpronounceable, andwas usually replaced with an alternate name of God such as “Adonai,”(which translates as “Lord.”) For the complete article on this topic click here.
