Religious Education Month
Message from Bishop McCormack -
Religious Education Month
Our Catholic faith is shared best by witness. All Christians are called to witness to Christ by imitating His words and deeds. In a special way, parents and catechists (religious educators) share the Catholic faith with children and young people both by what they say and what they do. Passing on our faith to adults is also at the heart of the mission and ministry of the Church in parish life.I recently spent a day with the catechetical leaders from around our Diocese. I was so impressed and inspired by their zeal for the Lord and their desire to effectively assist the pastors and the parents of the children and young people in their parishes. We are fortunate in New Hampshire to have so many gifted and well informed leaders in catechetical ministry. Bishop Christian, the pastors of our parishes, and I are blessed to have them as co-workers in the vineyard of the Lord.
As we celebrate the life and ministry of catechists, I ask all Catholics in New Hampshire to consider re-dedicating themselves to learning more about our Faith. A great tool for adults is the US Catholic Catechism for Adults which can be purchased from USCCB Publishing or the Catechism of the Catholic Church which is available for free online.
Let us continue to pray for one another, that our experience of the Lord will deepen our understanding of God’s unconditional love for each of us and all of us. May we share this Good News with other every day in all that we say and do.
Religious Education Month "...celebrates the ongoing witness and dedication of catechists and the support and participation of the entire community. Catechesis is a ministry for a lifetime, one that opens our hearts to Christ's love, draws us into a deeper relationship with him, and invites us to assume our part in being his faithful disciples." (Celebrating the Catechetical Year 2007-2008, page 8)We've interviewed four catechists from around the state and each week during the month of November, a different profile will be posted onto our website. In this series of interviews, we look for the connections between our faith life and our work life.
