Lay Ministry Formation Program
What's Happening
Called to Servant Leadership Survey Results
The diocesan Called to Servant Leadership program continues to be a great success, and I want to encourage you to recommend more applicants for the new session in the Fall. So far, 73 people have graduated from the three year program. We recently did a survey of graduates to see how their ministry in the Church has changed since Called to Servant Leadership. Three quarters of all graduates responded to the survey.
The survey results show that 67% of respondents have been given more responsibility at the parish or Catholic school since completing Called to Servant Leadership. The responsibility exists in a variety of areas of ministry.
37% indicated that they served as coordinators of religious education.
27% listed themselves as catechists of adults.
98% said they would recommend the program to others.
39% said they learned about the program through the brochure distributed in parishes, while 28% responded to the personal invitation of their pastor.
These last numbers, in particular are worth stressing. More than two-thirds of graduates got involved in Called to Servant Leadership either because of reading the brochure, which was readily available in the parish, or at the personal invitation of their pastor. Pastors are encouraged to reach out to strong candidates in their parish and ask them to consider the Called to Servant Leadership program.
The deadline for application is August 31st. If you would like a graduate of Called to Servant Leadership to speak at your parish, please Pat Gabree at pgabree@rcbm.org or 669-3100, Ext. 172.
"Co-Workers" Seminar to be offered in Rome in 2010
For the fourth consecutive year there will be a unique seminar opportunity in Rome on June 6--11, 2010 for lay ecclesial ministers and students in lay ministry formation programs. This year's theme is "The Co-responsibility of Priests and Laity: Wisdom from the Past, Hope for the Future." The program will explore from early times to the present day how ordained and lay members of Christ's faithful have been "co-workers" for the sake of the Church's communion and mission. The program has a unique methodology of guided visits to churches and historical sites, lectures, panel presentations, peer conversations, contacts with Vatican staff, journalists and other experts in Rome. It offers intellectual stimulation, spiritual enrichment, cultural appreciation, socializing and the enjoyment of the "dolce vita" that only Rome can offer. Mass is offered daily and there is the opportunity to attend a papal audience. Group size is limited to 20.
The seminar is offered by the Lay Centre in Rome. See their website for further details and registration information: http://www.laycentre.org/programs.html .
The seminar has been designed with help from the USCCB Secretariat of Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth. For more information contact Rick McCord, the Executive Director, 202-541-3043 or rmccord@usccb.org.
