 Support Catholic SchoolsNew England Catholic (Arch)Bishops support for Catholic Schools

As we, the Catholic bishops of the United States, and the entire Catholic community continue our journey through the twenty-first century, it remains our duty to model the Person of Jesus Christ, to teach the Gospel, and to evangelize our culture. We are convinced that Catholic elementary and secondary schools play a critical role in this endeavor. – Renewing Our Commitment to Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools in the Third Millennium, 2005, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Therefore, the Catholic Bishops of New England have agreed to communicate their thoughts, and commitment and dedication regarding the importance of Catholic schools. Communication will be delivered through articles authored by the Catholic (Arch)Bishops within the New England region from January 2009 to April 2010.

Catholic Schools are "The Pearl of Great Price"

The goal of a Catholic school is to offer its students a different kind of education, one rooted in and imbued with the perennial wisdom about the human person, a wisdom that derives from the Catholic Church’s tradition of faith and morals. A Catholic school education seeks to educate not only the mind with a love for the truth but also to touch the hearts and form the consciences of its students with a desire and commitment to pursue what is good, right and just. Bishop Robert McManus of the Diocese of Worcester reflects on how the vibrancy and vitality of the Church in the United States can be attributed in large measure to the effectiveness of our Catholic Schools. Read more. Superintendent's Message

"Go, teach!" Christ charged His first disciples. Since the beginning of Christianity, education has been one of the most important missions of the Church. Its success depends upon professional competence, quality, and above all, the commitment to Christ.

The Diocese of Manchester has a long, proud tradition of Catholic school education. It is blessed to have so many individuals who have made a strong commitment to Catholic education and its mission of teaching the message of Jesus Christ. From Bishop McCormack who from his first days in the diocese has pledged his total commitment to Catholic education, to committed, qualified principals, faculty and staff who have dedicated themselves to educating youth and parents who struggle and sacrifice to make sure their child gets off to the best possible start; the Catholic education community is united in the belief that every child is a gift, and every child deserves a Catholic education.

As one, we celebrate and challenge ourselves and our students. Our mission clearly states that we are pressed by our commitment to advocate for children and youth. It is a statement filled with the need to instill in our students Gospel values and provide an educational program that prepares students for lives of leadership in the church and in the world.

As Catholic educators committed to our Catholic faith, our families and our school communities, we believe that:

  • Catholic schools are both preservers of basic Catholic-Christian traditions and agents of appropriate change;
  • the school community is a vital force for preparing future civic and Church leaders;
  • students are pilgrim people, making their journey through this life with a constant focus on the next;
  • we work to stimulate the spirit of inquiry, the acquisition of knowledge and understanding, and the thoughtful formulation of worthy goals;
  • children are influenced by home, community, and a society in which attitudes toward Christian values are often challenged;
  • parents, the source from whom children and youth derive their values, entrust their children to the Catholic school to instruct, complement and intensify the education and formation begun in the home and,
  • we are called to assist these parents in fulfilling their obligation for the Christian formation and education of their children.

The Diocese of Manchester is committed to the ministry of evangelization and teaching. Through the spirit of joy and enthusiasm, we encourage others to join us in our apostolate of formation in the Catholic schools in the Diocese of Manchester.
