Message of Bishop Peter A. Libasci on the Election of Abbot Mark Cooper, O.S.B.
(MANCHESTER, NH) Bishop Peter A. Libasci today made the following statement:
“Today, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Manchester is jubilant at the news of Saint Anselm Abbey’s election of its new Abbot, Father Mark Cooper, O.S.B.
“I offer heartfelt prayers and congratulations to Father Abbot Mark, the monks of Saint Anselm Abbey, and the entire Saint Anselm College community.
“The Benedictine monks of Saint Anselm Abbey have been an important part of the Catholic Church and its mission in New Hampshire ever since Bishop Denis M. Bradley, the first Bishop of Manchester, encouraged the monks of the Order of Saint Benedict to build a home here.
“With today’s election of the Abbey’s fifth Abbot, Saint Anselm Abbey begins a new chapter in our shared history. We extend our sincere gratitude and our promise of prayer and continued friendship to retired Father Abbot Matthew Leavy, O.S.B., and we ask the Lord’s gracious blessing on newly elected Father Abbot Mark Cooper, O.S.B. as he shepherds the Saint Anselm Community according to the Holy Rule of Saint Benedict in Prayer and Work and constant faithful witness to prefer nothing to Christ.”
The Diocese of Manchester is the Roman Catholic Church of New Hampshire, serving the needs of more than 285,000 Catholics. For more information, please visit www.catholicnh.org.
